Location Photography
Photographing on location is an exercise in distilling; subtracting all that is irrelevant until you are left with the essence or core of your subject. Michael has shot still and video footage from a helicopter flying over Sydney, on a runway at Changi Airport, in theatre during surgery, knee deep in a river, in kitchens and factories, and from a crane dangling over an Indonesian shipyard. His client list includes St. Vincent’s Hospital and health facilities, Landcom, ANC couriers, and Pearson’s Florist.
Art Photography
As a teen Michael photographed his Mum’s paintings and her work in the studio for the local paper and now, decades later, collaborates with galleries and artists, documenting their work and creating photo and video collateral for websites, press packs, catalogues, and socials. Michael enjoys conversations with artists about their intent, colour priority, and colour relationships, all of which guide his representations of their work. In recent years, Michael has worked with Australian artists Elisabeth Cummings, Amanda Penrose Hart and Jasper Knight, among others, to showcase their work.
Studio Photography
Michael is devoted to finding the perfect lighting, moment, and angle for a still. Starting with a blank canvas, he submerges himself fully in the work, adding and refining, to capture the essence of his subject. His client list includes Pearson’s Florist, Bonds, Godox, Weight Watchers and Sandhurst.
Motion
When technology evolved and video became more accessible to photographers in around 2012, Michael applied his photographer’s eye for lighting, composition, and direction to shoot and edit video. His recent projects include ANC Smiles B2B communication videos for ANC couriers, and Dragonflies, the video accompanying Amanda Penrose Hart’s 2023 exhibition at King Street Gallery
Careers Video
In collaboration with HR expert Sarah Oquist, Michael creates authentic recruitment videos to help employers engage and attract the right people in a crowded marketplace. Recent clients include cyber security consultancy Cyconsol.
Studio Hire
Michael is the founder of The Roller Co-Working, a co-working space on Gadigal land that has hosted various creatives and freelancers, including photographers, since 2009. The open and customisable studio space has spacious original windows and a double barn door facing north to capitalise on natural daylight. The Roller is the perfect canvas for your project with bright natural lighting, which can also be blacked out for full studio lighting control.

About the studio
Michael's studio has spacious original windows and a double barn door to capture as much natural daylight as possible in an open and customisable space. The minimalist interior features a plain white painted brick wall and a black wooden floor. The space offers bright natural lighting that can also be blacked out for full studio lighting control.

This collaborative approach involves extensive research on Michael’s part into David Jones’ existing collateral, workshops with key David Jones stakeholders including upper-management, test shots delivered for approval for each new category such as fragrance or lingerie and on-set discussion and direction. Michael was always willing to try new styles, perspectives and technology to satisfy David Jones’ brief. Deadlines were always met and budgets achieved without compromising the creative process along the way.
